Dr. Juliann Woods to lead Communication Disorders faculty
Professor directed speech and hearing clinic for past four years
Professor Juliann Woods has been named chair of the Department of Communication Disorders.
For the past four years, Dr. Woods has served as director of the L.L. Schendel Speech and Hearing Clinic. As department chair, she succeeds Dr. Howard Goldstein, who was named associate dean for research for the College of Communication.
“Juliann is an experienced administrator and a gifted clinical educator,” said Dr. John Mayo, College of Communication dean. “She has been the major force in developing her department's innovative distance-learning masters program, which this fall will enroll its fourth cohort of students.”
She earned her bachelor’s degree in 1973 and her master’s degree in 1974, both at the University of Northern Iowa, and her doctorate in 1990 at the University of Oregon. She joined the faculty at Florida State University in 1999.
“I am very fortunate to be able to support the growth and development of such an accomplished academic and clinical education program. Our task as a department is to maintain our high quality graduate education while expanding our research agenda and visibility nationally.” Dr. Woods said. “Working collaboratively as a department will be important to enhance the opportunities for each faculty and staff member.
“Personally, I am interested in expanding our use of technology as a strategy to enhance our efficiency in communication and collaboration,” she added.
Janice McClung will succeed Dr. Woods as clinic director. Ms. McClung has served effectively as assistant clinic director for the past two years, the dean said, and she brings a wealth of community and school experience to her new position.
