American Forensic Association’s District 6 Tournament - January 26-28, 2007

Florida State University will host some of the country’s top collegiate public speakers this weekend in back-to-back competitions at the Bellamy Building.

On Friday evening, January 26, and all day Saturday, January 27, students will compete in the American Forensic Association’s District 6 Tournament, a qualifier for the National Individual Events Tournament. On Sunday, competition shifts to the FSU Swing Tournament.

About 200 students from more than a dozen colleges and universities in the Southeast will be visiting Tallahassee for the event, FSU Director of Forensics Robert Aronoff said.

“While FSU has hosted debated tournaments, this is the first individual-events tournament we’ve hosted,” Aronoff said.

In both tournaments, students will compete in the following categories: Impromptu Speaking; Informative Speaking; Prose Interpretation; Dramatic Duo; Extemporaneous Speaking; Persuasive Speaking; Program Oral Interpretation; After Dinner Speaking; Communication Analysis; Drama Interpretation; and Poetry Interpretation.

Awards will be given to all finalists, and the top three schools will receive a school sweepstakes award. Students who compete in five events in the preliminary rounds – including a combination of an interpretation event, prepared speaking event and a limited-preparation event such as extemporaneous speaking – will be eligible for a pentathlon award.
