Experts on the latest in communication techniques
When public relations professionals in the state of Florida are looking for experts on the latest in communication techniques, they often look to Florida State University’s Department of Communication. That’s why Mark Zeigler and Dr. Jay Rayburn were among the more than 200 attendees at the Florida Public Relations Association meeting in Amelia Island in August.
Practitioners from across the state, attending for professional development and networking opportunities, heard their inspiring closing presentation from Associate in Communication Zeigler.
For Mark, this was a well-received repeat performance. He first outlined communication and life lessons to FPRA members at their conference in 1995. “He makes you laugh, cry and think, all in one program,” a participant said.
Another remarked, “There is a charm about Mark—he can speak to a huge crowd and make each person feel like he is talking directly to him or her,” and “He inspires your need to care for other people, to boost others and to lend a hand, just as he does with his students.”
Mark is the Summer Director of the FSU London Program, a member of the Honors Program faculty and the faculty advisor to Omicron Delta Kappa, the nation’s most prestigious honor society recognizing leadership, scholarship and service. He also served as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs for the College of Communication from 1993-1999.
Also at the 2006 conference, well known public relations expert Associate Professor Rayburn took a break from his usual place on the program to be honored with the Past President’s Award for continued work for FPRA.
Jay was president in 1994, received the Association’s most prestigious Dillen Award in 1996 and was recognized as State Member of the Year in 1991.
“I’ve often wished I’d been one of his students because I’ve seen his love of his students and how he follows them into their careers for many years after graduation.” Immediate Past President Adrienne Moore said of Rayburn, "Jay can give you a complete history of his students. That’s dedication!"
